TR Machinery

A new heating system installation at TR Machinery providing an efficient solution tailored to the company’s needs.

This installation was part of the new premises built for TR Machinery. With no gas supply available on-site and heat pump quotes exceeding £150,000, the company chose oil as the most practical option.

TR Machinery showroom is located in Newport, Shropshire. It’s an official Fendt tractor dealer for Cheshire, Shropshire and Mid Wales.

Solution

The installation of a cascade system with two Sapphire boilers, delivering a combined output range of 6 kW to 64 kW, successfully resolved the building’s heating challenges. This setup offered not only the most appropriate solution but also the most energy-efficient response to the building’s requirements.
The showroom has four Smith’s high level fan convectors heated via the two Sapphire boilers and destratification fans. All the areas of the building are heated via radiators throughout. The installation of Sapphire boilers’ cascade has significantly optimised the building’s energy efficiency.

According to a heat loss calculation, the total demand across the site was estimated at just over 100 kW at -3 °C. Installing a single oil boiler sized for this peak load would have meant running an oversized unit for 90% of the year, wasting oil and increasing running costs. Two Sapphire boilers, providing an output of between 6kw and 64 kW, were the best decision.

The large showroom was installed with destratification fans to help with the heating. In addition, the other areas were equipped with air conditioning that could also provide heating if required. This setup allowed to take full advantage of the Sapphire boilers modulation capabilities, ensuring efficient performance during periods of low heat demand including summer periods where the boilers sole responsibility is to heat a single 250ltr hot water cylinder which provides hot water for the premises.

OpenTherm controls were integrated with the Sapphire boilers, enabling two fully modulating units to operate with weather compensation—

automatically adjusting their output based on the external temperature and also the demand within the building.

The engineers zoned the system with ground and first floor offices separated due to the first floor offices not in use at all times, and achieved seamless operation—running either one or both boilers as needed to match demand.
Commissioning took place during the winter, with outdoor temperatures below 0°C, and the boilers still brought the building up to the desired 20°C without issue.
