Air source heat pumps use refrigerants to absorb heat energy from the air outside and convert it into useable energy to heat our homes and hot water.
The heat pump draws in air and passes it over an evaporator, where it comes into contact with a refrigerant (R290). This refrigerant has a very low boiling point, so it evaporates into a gas when exposed to the heat in the air, absorbing latent energy in the process.
The gas is then compressed, which raises its temperature further, before moving through a heat exchanger. At this stage, the refrigerant condenses back into a liquid, releasing its heat into the water used for the property’s heating system. The liquid refrigerant then returns to the evaporator, and the cycle continues.
